It is not easy to learn an instrument. Developing a solid self-discipline comes by applying yourself. Most of your practice will be away from your teacher so you have to have a strategy for maintaining a good work ethic. Learning your instrument can be a daunting task so here are seven tips to help you along your way.

  • Don’t waste you time. There are always things you need to do when you practice. It is easy to put off playing until tomorrow, but you shouldn’t do this. Begin practicing as soon as possible because it is so important to practice.
  • Make sure you keep in contact with other musicians. Stay in contact with friends who also play so you can bounce off and motivate each other.
  • Keep going. Don’t get stuck in a rut, it is important to keep on leaning new skills and developing your playing.
  • Make the best use of your time. if you don’t have a regular practice time then it is just about impossible to be consistent. Establishing a constant time to practice is vital to you developing fully as a musician.
  • Have a good work environment to practice in. Practicing in a good place is vital. An environment that is clean and quiet is essential to practice so you can fully concentrate on what you are doing.
  • Be complete. Always try to become a complete musician. In order to become a complete musician it’s a good idea to keep a list of everything you will need to do.
  • Know how you work and the habits you have. Each person has their own individual way of learning. In order to adjust your practice, this is the reason to maintain it.

I hope these tips can help you with your practice. Good self-discipline comes down to goal setting and having a good plan.
