We all have our favourite album artwork that mean something to us, or reflect what the album stands for, or is just that damn awesome we had to buy the album. We look at two artists who had an impact on metal album artwork.

  • Any Cannibal Corpse album cover done by Vince Locke. There’s no denying Locke’s artwork has contributed towards the success of Cannibal Corpse. This gruesome artwork has helped give Cannibal Corpse an edge over other death metal bands and the artwork has been banned in other countries, causing alternative covers to be made. The artwork goes hand in hand with the music, you know exactly what your getting with a Cannibal corpse album. The latest album ‘Evisceration plague’ isnt as gruesome as usual, but there was uproar when the album ‘kill’ didnt have his artwork on.
  • Derek Riggs- Iron Maiden. The classic Iron Maiden album was the first to feature then new vocalist Bruce Dickinson and it propelled Maiden onto a whole other level. You have to wonder how many albums got shifted just because of the artwork of Eddie being controlled by the devil, who in turn is being controlled by Eddie. Just who is manipulating who in that artwork? The artwork was supposed to be for the Run to the hills single, but Maiden manager Rod Smallwood thought it was too good just to be a single. Riggs has also put Eddie into space, thrown him into a mental institution for labotomising and even turned him into a mummy. Although he hasnt done any studio album artwork since ‘no prayer for the dying, surely were due a new one soon. Please?
