How to read guitar tabs

A thorough knowledge of the neck of the guitar is essential when you are learning how to play.

Along with this, you have to learn how to read guitar tabs. Guitar tabs give the aspiring player an abbreviated notation for reading chord instructions. It indicates which strings to hold down and which ones to leave open. Tabs also show which fret each string is pressed down on.

You need to be able to identify the different guitar strings before you can play using guitar tabs. The thinnest string on the guitar is the E string, which is also referred to as the number 1 string. The second string, number two is B. String number three is your G string and the fourth is the D string. The fifth string, number five is the A string and finally, the sixth string, the E corresponds with the six in tab.

There are usually nineteen frets on the neck of the guitar, which are assigned the numbers one, starting at the base, to nineteen at the end of the neck. In order to learn how to read guitar tabs, you must understand which string needs to be held down on which fret. For instance, if you see the notation reading 1-2, you need to hold down the first string on the second fret.

Multiple strings must be pressed simultaneously in order to play chords on the guitar. Guitar tabs make it much easier to play chords correctly. A tab notation of 2-1 4-2 5-3 shows the guitarist how to play a C chord. 1-3 2-2 6-3 give us a G chord. Learning to play with guitar tabs becomes easier if you look at charts that display the different chords. If a “0″ appears on the tab, the string is left open while playing; that is, it is not held down.

There are some additional symbols you need to be able to identify if you want to learn how to read guitar tabs. An ‘h’ notation indicates to hammer on the note. However, a ‘g’ notation means to pull of the note, which is the opposite of hammering it. A “b” indicates that the string must be bent so that the note wavers as it’s played. To instruct the player to release a note and go on to the next and “r” is used in tab notation. A “/” denotes a slide to the following note listed in the musical notation.

If you learn how to read guitar tabs, you will be able to quickly and easily learn to play new songs. After you have learned how to read them, check out the numerous websites that offer guitar tabs for any tune you want to play.
