I know this is a long post, but if you feel like reading, by all means.
This struck my mind as I was watching Ken Burns Jazz.

We’re seeing this merging of hip hop production with other genres (electronica namely). Much the same way Jazz was being merged with rock, ska, funk,R & B, etc at its fusion stage.

The way Jazz musicians of the late 70’s and early 80’s rejected the classic avant garde subgenres of jazz (hard bop, free, cool, etc), reminds me of how the new hip hop generation (artists AND fans) has begun to take small steps in rejecting their genre’s ‘golden age.’

The lack of real improvisation in hip hop draws parallels to the abandoning of improvisation in smooth jazz. I.e. rappers aren’t freestyling off the dome anymore. I would argue freestyling is as essential to a rapper as improvisation was to a cool jazz trumpeter ya dig?

When fusion jazz started, there hadn’t been a prominent new trumpeter in almost 10 years. Similar to how there hasn’t been any new prominent MCs in at least the past 5 years (some OGs will tell you 10 with a straight face tho and they have a damn good reason).

This leads me to my next point: hip hop needs a new champion of its golden age much like jazz got in the late 70s/early 80s with Wynton Marsalis. A young guy championing the classical period in his genre, even if he wasn’t even around to experience it the first time. He never thought of the greatest era of his genre as ‘dated’ the way i hear young fans of hip hop say about older stuff. And he didn’t need to ‘change the game’ or switch his style up or any of those other ridiculous standards that get placed only on hip hop.

At the time Marsalis came in, jazz was in limbo, artists were moving into fusion and the new generation of fans were too young to remember anything about Jazz’s ‘golden era. It was almost lost forever, kinda like how the sound of golden era hip hop (with no youngsters riding for it and doing their interpretation) is on the brink of being lost forever right now.
